The Department of Art and Art History at Gettysburg College invites applications for a three-year, renewable Lecturer/Gallery Director position. This position is full-time, 12-month, non-tenure eligible. We seek candidates with a strong commitment to teaching and a demonstrated interest in working within a liberal arts environment. This position combines teaching and gallery leadership responsibilities. The teaching load is the equivalent of four courses per academic year, primarily in modern and contemporary art history and museum studies. The remaining responsibilities, equivalent to two teaching units, are dedicated to serving as Gallery Director, including overseeing the exhibition program, advancing faculty and student research and scholarship related to the gallery, organizing public programs, and engaging in grant writing and fundraising efforts in partnership with the department and campus partners, the College’s Grants Office and Advancement Office, and the Provost’s Office, and supervising students/staff. The Gallery Director works closely with academic programs and administrative offices across campus, the library and its Special Collections and College Archives, and engages with a broad network of national and international colleagues, including museum professionals, artists, collectors, and scholars. The preferred start date is July 1, 2026.
Schmucker Art Gallery, which has a strong teaching-related mission, is a lively art space that displays eight to ten exhibitions each year in its Main Gallery and Project Space. Exhibitions feature works by local, national, and international contemporary artists, historical art from public and private collections, as well as objects curated from Gettysburg College’s permanent collection. The Gallery also encourages students and faculty at Gettysburg College and the community to use the space for dynamic discussions and to create connections across disciplines.
Gettysburg College is a highly selective liberal arts college located within 90 minutes of the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. Established in 1832, the College has a rich history and is situated on a 220-acre campus with an enrollment of over 2,200 students.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in art history and demonstrate experience in undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Leadership experiences in museum or gallery administration and curatorial practice, and excellent interpersonal skills and experience of mentoring, leadership experiences in museum or gallery administration and curatorial practice, excellent interpersonal skills, and experience managing staff. A record of successful fundraising in an academic and/or museum setting is welcomed.
