Position Overview:

This engineering position, in the Systems & Test Engineering group, will support all cell-related aspects of our battery management system (BMS) software. The primary objective is to develop software that ensures our products will function safely and do so with world-class performance.

About the Role – You will:

  • Create and maintain performance and lifetime models of lithium-ion cell behavior.
  • Develop experiments to parametrize and validate models. Analyze resulting data.
  • Develop on-board real-time algorithms that involve cell behavior: state-of-charge, state-of-health, power limits, temperature estimation, etc. Work with BMS engineers to implement algorithms.
  • Devise cell level and pack level experiments to parameterize and validate algorithm performance.
  • Develop battery pack simulation model using Simulink to facilitate powertrain integration and evaluate pack performance. Use model to investigate faults in the field and lab.
  • Interface with vehicle teams and external OEM partners to develop and refine algorithms.
  • Analyze algorithm performance from real world vehicle data and use learnings to propose algorithm/model improvements.
  • Investigate the use of physics-based models and machine learning to build better algorithms and models.

  • This position will be part of the Systems Engineering team that supports Proterra’s Manufacturing and Engineering operations.
  • You will report to the Cell Engineering Manager and collaborate with other Engineering team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and manufacturing facilities in Greer, SC.

Your Experience Includes:

  • 5+ years of work experience in at least one of the following: controls engineering, state estimation, battery modeling, or battery algorithms.
  • BS/MS/PhD in a related field.
  • Familiarity with basic electrochemistry and lithium-ion cell behavior.
  • Proficient with MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Proficient with dynamic modeling, Kalman filtering, and state estimator design.
  • Experience in writing code to analyze large data sets.
  • Experience with requirement management (JAMA, Doors, etc).
  • Experience with cell modeling (equivalent circuit and/or electrochemical).
