Americana World Community Center’s Mission is to provide holistic services to Louisville’s refugee, immigrant, and underserved population to build strong and healthy families, create a safe and supportive community and help every individual realize their potential.

POSITION: TRAINING COORDINATOR

The Americana Community Center is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and patient Training Coordinator for our adult education programs. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to empower community members from diverse backgrounds by helping them develop essential skills for personal and professional growth across multiple program areas.

Position Overview

The Training Coordinator will provide instruction across three key program areas: English as a Second Language (ESL), Digital Skills, and GED preparation. This versatile role supports adult learners in developing language proficiency, digital literacy, and academic skills necessary for their integration into the community and enhancement of opportunities for employment, higher education, and personal achievement.

Key Responsibilities

ESL Instruction:

  • Teach English language skills including reading, writing, speaking, and listening to adult learners at various proficiency levels
  • Plan and deliver engaging, culturally sensitive lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners
  • Assist students with practical English applications such as job interviews, workplace communication, and everyday conversations

Digital Skills Instruction:

  • Teach fundamental computer skills including basic hardware operation, keyboard and mouse use, and file management
  • Provide instruction on internet navigation, email usage, and online safety practices
  • Guide learners in using common software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and video conferencing tools
  • Assist students with smartphone and tablet basics, including app usage and settings
  • Teach digital citizenship, including online privacy, recognizing scams, and protecting personal information

GED Preparation:

  • Provide instruction in GED subject areas including Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans that address individual learning needs and test preparation strategies
  • Assess students' academic levels and create personalized study plans to address knowledge gaps
  • Help students build test-taking skills, time management strategies, and confidence
  • Utilize practice tests and study materials to prepare students for the GED exam

General Responsibilities:

  • Create a welcoming, supportive, and non-judgmental learning environment that encourages participation and builds confidence
  • Assess student progress and adapt teaching methods to individual learning styles and varying skill levels
  • Maintain attendance records and track student progress across all programs
  • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure program quality and coordination
  • Provide regular feedback and encouragement to students

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma required; college degree or coursework preferred
  • Fluency in English (native or near-native proficiency)
  • Strong proficiency with computers, smartphones, tablets, and common software applications
  • Strong knowledge in one or more GED subject areas (math, language arts, science, social studies)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, cultural sensitivity, and enthusiasm for working with diverse populations including immigrants, seniors, and low-income individuals
  • Ability to explain technical and academic concepts in simple, accessible language
  • Ability to commit to a regular schedule (typically 10-15 hours per week)

Preferred:

  • Previous teaching, tutoring, or educational experience
  • TESOL, TEFL, or related certification
  • Familiarity with GED test format and requirements
  • Technical support or training experience
